Water Triggers under the EPBC Act 1999

An amendment to Australia's national environment law, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC) was introduced into Federal Parliament on the 13th March 2013. The amendment is to ensure that water resources are a matter of national environmental significance in relation to coal seam gas and large coal mining development assessment.

The reforms will require Federal assessment and approval of coal seam gas and large coal mining developments which will have a significant impact on a water resource. The water trigger allows the Minister to set appropriate conditions as part of the project approval to ensure that impacts on a water resource are considered and acceptable. Good news for our valuable water resources.
